# 15. A Study of One

The sharpest objection to everything on this site hasn't been addressed yet, and it deserves to be, because the readers I want are exactly the ones who'll raise it. It goes: *this is very persuasive, which is precisely the problem. Can you actually measure decision readiness, or is this a plausible story wearing a lab coat?*

Take the objection at full strength, because half of it is right.

What cannot be done, by anyone, and you should walk away from anyone who implies otherwise: no measurement predicts whether Thursday's call will be *correct*. Decision outcomes are contaminated beyond rescue (luck, markets, other people) which is the whole reason the second essay in this series argued for abandoning the outcome side entirely. Anyone selling you a score that forecasts good decisions is selling astrology with sensors. That version of the claim is unfalsifiable, and unfalsifiable is the polite word for it.

What can be measured is narrower, and the narrowness is what makes it real: the condition of the capacities a decision runs on. Whether the sleep that occurred was the kind that consolidates and restores, or merely unconsciousness with the right duration. Whether the autonomic system is holding the flexible, responsive profile described earlier in this series, or has flattened into the pattern that every performance field recognises as accumulating load. Whether cognitive throughput (attention, working memory, processing speed, impulse control) is at its usual level today or measurably off it. None of this is speculative instrumentation. Each piece is established physiology or validated cognitive assessment, decades deep in its own literature. The new thing is not any measurement. It's the assembly: pointing instruments that already exist at a subject nobody thought to point them at, in service of a question nobody thought to ask.

The deeper answer to the sceptic is about *reference*, and it holds even if you never work with me.

Almost all health measurement runs on population logic: your number, compared against the distribution of everyone's numbers, flagged if you leave the normal range. Useful for finding disease; nearly useless for what we're doing. You don't need to know how your Tuesday compares to a hundred thousand strangers' Tuesdays. You need to know how it compares to *yours*, because the question that matters is never "is this founder normal?" but "is this founder themself today?" The reference range is you. Which means the measurement necessarily begins unglamorously: weeks of baseline, instruments running while you simply live, mapping what your own system does at its genuine standard: your sleep architecture, your autonomic signature, your cognitive numbers, and how all of it moves against your actual load. Only once your normal is mapped does deviation become signal. Without a baseline, every reading is an anecdote. With one, the same reading is data, and the founder becomes what he should have been all along: a study of one, run with the discipline of a study.

This is self-experimentation, a phrase with a mixed reputation it only half deserves. The disreputable version is the one you've seen: a man, a gadget, a protocol from a podcast, and conclusions drawn from a sample of one enthusiastic week. The reputable version built modern sport. For decades, coaches used physiological data on individual athletes far ahead of what the journals had formally blessed: measure the individual, establish the individual's baseline, intervene, measure again, keep what moves the numbers, discard what doesn't. Medicine, correctly, calls that insufficient evidence for treating a population. Performance, correctly, calls it the only method there is for optimising an individual, because the individual is the entire population of interest, and no randomised trial of strangers will ever tell you what *your* system does after *your* travel week. The methods disagree because the questions differ. Sceptics who apply the first standard to the second question aren't being rigorous. They're using the wrong instrument, which is its own kind of sloppiness.

Honesty requires one more concession: as a formal construct, decision readiness is young. The research to define and validate it rigorously is underway, some of it mine, and the field is where sports science stood in the 1970s: the practice running ahead of the literature, the literature closing the gap. If that makes you want to wait thirty years for the meta-analyses, that is a coherent position. But notice it isn't the position you take anywhere else in your life. You didn't wait for academic consensus to adopt the practices that built your company; you ran disciplined experiments on a sample of one and kept what worked. This is that, applied to the asset upstream of all of it.

So the sceptic's question, *can judgement be measured?*, was never quite the right question. Judgement in general, out there, as an abstraction: perhaps not, or not yet. Your capacities, against your baseline, on the days that matter to you: yes, with instruments that already exist, starting whenever the instruments are switched on.

You are already a study of one. You have been your entire career. The only question is whether anyone is collecting the data.
